After a long, cold winter, the start of summer can’t come soon enough. Gone are the chilly days of snow boots, scraping your car in the morning, and bundling up in a down jacket before leaving the house, replaced by shorts, sun dresses, and outdoor summer fun. Unless, of course, it rains.
Rain in the summer can be a letdown, especially when you had a fun day planned, but all is not lost. With so many exciting indoor activities to enjoy in the summer, there’s no reason to let a little rain spoil the fun.
Hit the Movies
With a huge lineup of thrillers and action flicks hitting the theaters this summer, use the rain as an excuse to grab some friends and see a new release. Whether you favor Wonder Woman or the new Transformers film, an afternoon at the movies is a great way to enjoy some air conditioning, popcorn, and an extra large Icee. Want to save? Hit a matinee to avoid prime time ticket prices.
Visit a Museum
Summer can be a slow period for these indoor attractions, but a rainy day is a great time to explore some of Denver’s best museums. Take a look at the past, present, and future at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science or browse works by Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso at the Denver Art Museum. If you’d rather explore scientific innovations, the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum has plenty to do and see.
Enjoy an Arcade Day
Who says arcade games are just for kids? At Brunswick Zone, parents and children alike can enjoy bowling, billiards, arcade games, and even laser tag. One of Denver’s top destinations for all ages fun, it’s easy to spend an entire day revisiting old school games or challenging friends to an all-out pool competition. With plenty of snacks for the little ones and pitchers of beer for those 21 and up, this inclusive destination is just right for everyone.
Fight Your Way to Freedom
If you’re looking for heart-pounding excitement, an escape room is the ideal place to enjoy a rainy day. A group activity perfect for both casual afternoons and coordinated events, this unique challenge puts 2 to 12 people to the test with a series of intellectually-stimulating clues. Each team enters a themed room with only 60 minutes to solve all of the clues necessary to escape. Rooms are full of challenges, puzzles, codes, and more that can help you decipher your way out before it’s too late. Some clues will lead to you to other secrets within the room, like additional clues and hidden secondary rooms, while others will show you the secret way out. With a ticking clock, every moment counts as you work together with your team to come out on top.
As Denver’s top escape room, EscapeWorks Denver is the best place to explore when the weather turns from sun to rain. From family outings to birthday parties and corporate events, any gathering is the right time to try your best to escape. I organized a team outing and we did the Exorcist Escape Room experience. It was definitely challenging and had some jump scares but we had a blast and really enjoyed our time! Jace, at Escape Works Ballpark, was truly fantastic and used great judgment with deciding when to give us clues and helped make the experience enjoyable!!

Me and my friends drove from Colorado Springs and did a walk in. We ended up getting the Vampire Hunter escape room and it was challenging but fun! All around we had a good time and it was a great experience. Gideon was super helpful and patient with us and I would for sure recommend trying this location out!!

We’ve played 20+ escape rooms and the Egyptian Tomb at the EscapeWorks Champa location easily makes our short list of good escape rooms! Nicely themed and it had a real sandy floor!! We appreciated that the puzzles were appropriate to the theme and not a bunch of combination locks. (Bonus: many props were “Easter eggs” referencing classic adventure movies!) Game master Rhys delivered timely hints that didn’t make solving a puzzle too easy— which is a fine skill! We’ve experienced many game masters that basically deliver a solution in the guise of a clue which spoils the fun.

We had a great time doing Space Wars at the new Ballpark location! Xander was our game master and did a great job keeping us on track. We especially enjoyed the light sabers and the audio immersion. We will be back!
